USS Greenville in Drydock

Hobby Boss 1:700 scale USS Greeneville. The assembled kit consists of only 6 parts, with choices for bridge and diving plane position. The level of detail is acceptable at this scale, and parts fit is OK, but could be better

The Sky Wave/ Pit Road drydock kit out of the box. The dock wasn't really suitable for what I had in mind, so major surgery was in order.

I cut the drydock apart and reassembled the halves into a longer, cut-away dock, and added a wider, more detailed floor.

I debated adding some buildings behind the rail crane, but I really want the focus to be on the damage to the Greeneville, so decided against buildings. I'm still up in the air about the crane.

Finished vignette. In the end, I decided not to include the crane. Weathering done with acrylic paints, enamel wash, oils, and dry pigment.

I didn't know the Greenville story so I decided to check it out. Seems to me the boat had a run of bad luck for a while there in 2001.

Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Btw... I didn't see any cranes win the pics I saw online, but there was a whole lot of scaffolding 😁

Thanks for the comments, and thanks for looking! Rui, yeah the USS Greeneville had 3 serious mishaps in a relatively short span, starting with the Ehime Maru collision.

The cranes are on rails, and I have two photos of the Greeneville in drydock in which they are visible, though different from the crane I have. The dock is different, too, but close enough for my purposes. My plan is to focus on the (relatively minor) damage to the sub from the collision, so I will show the Greeneville resting on the support blocks just after the water has been pumped from the drydock, and before any scaffolding or gangways have been erected, and before the propellor has been shrouded. I plan to have a small crowd of naval personnel on the dock watching.

In1:350 I can gently scrape the plastic propeller blades sharper, though maybe that is too fiddly with 1:700 scale?

It think it could be done at 1:700, but I'm not sure the result would be noticeable.

Good surgery on the dock! Love the contrast between the light crane and the grounded sub, she feels really heavy on that blocks already!
