Album info

Horten 229 was a late war German jet fighter aircraft. Only V2, the second prototype, flew powered by Jumo 004 jet engines and it crashed after several flights in early 1945. V3, depicted here, was captured in advanced stage of assembly and transported to USA and is currently undergoing restoration at NASM. My model in 1/72 scale by Zoukei--Mura depicts V3 assembled in USA before its "fake" German markings were applied, which remain to this day. The model was challenging, I know this company builds the same model in 1/48 and 1/32 scale, but this one seemed almost as an after thought. Fiddly bits, difficult joints for alignment and flashing were present throughout. The engines were nicely detailed and adding the front covered the most interesting part so I cut out a panel on top to expose these details, the same panel visible open in production photos. I also added some photo etch seatbelts as model had none, not even decal ones. I painted the model by shading panels with white, yellow and red on top of dark gray primer and then applying very diluted RLM76 on the undersides and RLM82 on the topsides.

Model 27 for 2022!
